RADLETT JUNIOR SQUASH CLUB….Summer 2017

The Radlett Junior Squash Club was set up in 2002 and is run by England Squash (Level 2) county coach Julian Craxton on Sunday afternoons, assisted by world top 150 players Ondrej Uherka (Czech number 2) and Rui Soares (Portugal number 1) with older juniors Ella Batten, Kaivalya Bhagat, Josh and Adam Ben and some of the parents also helping. Several of the players assist the coaches as part of their Duke of Edinburgh programme. The season runs from early September through to the end of April with the Sundays split into 2 sessions… beginners at 2.30 and middles/seniors from 3.30 until 5pm. The cost is £7 per week (non-members £9, but are encouraged to become members after a few introductory lessons).
The Sunday sessions involve a mixture of coaching, group mini-leagues and matches against other clubs. There is an internal squash ladder which is updated every week to add a friendly but competitive element to the games!! Many of the juniors are involved in Herts County squash; in the Summer of 2017 there were 12 Radlett juniors in the top six of their Herts age group ranking lists with Amber Pinkerton currently U-9 County Champion. Former Radlett juniors and now squash professionals Angus Gillams and Joe Green are currently (June 2017) world ranked 62 and 106 respectively. Radlett regularly hosts the Herts U-9 +U-11 County Championships in September as well as the adult county championships. In the 2016-7 season, six Radlett juniors were selected for Hertfordshire in inter-county matches and several are involved in Regional squad training. Racketlon competitions are growing in popularity; run by Jon Ben the squash and tennis elements are at Radlett with badminton and table-tennis at nearby Edge Grove School. Several juniors are involved in the county set-up as well as national Racketlon competitions with Josh Ben in May 2016 becoming British U16 National Champion.
Radlett has fielded 7 junior teams this season and has won, for the first time ever, all six of the Herts inter-club leagues..U11 div 1, U11 div 2, U13 div 1, U19 div 1, U19 div 2 and U-19 div 3.
Since the club’s inception, there have been 79 popular graded tournaments held with up to 60 players taking part each time. At each event a raffle for charity has been held with a total of £8470 raised for charity; currently we are supporting C.R.Y. (Cardiac Risk in the Young). This season (2016-7) there have been 7 graded tournaments at Radlett, raising £1050 for C.R.Y. In 2011 Radlett hosted, for the first time, a junior + parent tournament which proved a popular addition to the local squash calendar and the latest one took place in March 2017. In April 23rd we held our annual Junior Championships with the 36 entrants keenly competing for the silverware. Half-term and holiday courses take place regularly with all standards welcome; the Summer holiday 2017 dates are August 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 30th,31st (2-3pm beginners, 3-430pm middles/seniors)
Further information can be obtained from Club organiser Julian Craxton on 07711 748557. New members are welcome at any stage of the season!!
